2006 SPRING
“Once more into the breach”
The 2006 season is upon us and, if the first event, the Spring Jefferson,
is any indication we’re in for an exciting year!
Eighty
drivers competing in thirty-five classes set twelve class records over the
course of two days of timed laps on an often “greasy” course in hot and humid
weather.
While
there were no major incidents, there were some delays caused by cars dropping a
variety of fluids on “line” at various points on the circuit.
Nonetheless,
I believe that I can safely say that the event was a success owing, in no small
part, to the efforts of Tim Royer, the Dankos and the officials and workers who
gave of their time so that we drivers could compete.
A
special thanks to the Danko ladies who saw that we were well fed throughout the
weekend (it’s hard to stay on a diet when confronted with all that good food).
The
following drivers set class records: In ITC, Neil Deye in a VW Sirocco at
64.689; in ITE in an Audi S4, Bill Miller at 56.855; in STMOD, Matt Williams in
a BMW M3 at 57.539; in STMOD2, in a Porsche 914, Peter Stillwell at 61.267; in
SOLO V, Bob Oswald, Jr. at 58.597 in his Viper; in F500, Bill Kotyk at 61.278
in a Raptor; in CSR, Bryan Fritzler in a
Fritzler FT03 at 55.138; in DSR, at 52.899, Kurt Eikenberg in a Prince PR01; in
H1, Bill Lessig in a Lotus Elan at 60.553; in H3 at 55.448, Stan Vann in a
Caldwell D9; in SPEC MIATA, at 62.598, David Black; and, in SPEC1, George
Bowland in his BBR Shark at 48.718 which was also FTD for the event.
Some
brief observations on the weekend…Major Lawrence Grega, who is quite familiar
with the fortunes of war, became acquainted with the misfortunes of racing…Jim
Miller had a problem keeping wheels on his car…the “southern contingent” did
well for themselves…Skip Levengood’s CSR has really impressive
paintwork…Phaedra Kaufman is back with her Dad, Larry Long, co-driving his
car…Ron Holtzapple’s THUNDER ROADSTER is
another beautiful racer…Special 3 was full of awesome vehicles including Darryl
Danko’s LOLA Indy car (what if he hadn’t spun…), Dave Britton’s ‘63 Ford Falcon
(with 600hp) and the Fink’s Viking TT…Mark Childs is out of the Jeep and into a
Toyota MR2…Thor Pitman is back in the saddle again!…and Don McLaughlin is now in
an R5 instead of his trusty old R8- what’s with this fascination for things
French?
Thanks
again to all who made this event a success; the next event is the Spring
Weatherly Hillclimb…see you on the hill!
