Jefferson Circuit - Summit Point, WV

The Jefferson Circuit is part of the Summit Point Raceway complex in the eastern tip of West Virginia.  The 1.1 mile track combines off-camber turns and compound interacting esses with increasing and decreasing radius corners.  The 30-foot wide asphalt track is a definite change from the narrow uphill runs that make up the most of the years events.   The extra runoff room at the edges of the track gives drivers a little more room for error compared to the hills in the series where a deviation from the paved road often involves some contact with a tree or the guardrail.

The format of the race weekend also differs a little with the drivers making 2-4 timed laps in each of several sessions throughout the day.  Plus the private racetrack atmosphere and large pit area with a view of the track gives the drivers more time to watch their competitors than at a typical hillclimb and makes for good bench racing at the end of the day.

Driving Directions

Directions from Pennsylvania and the north.

From Interstate 81: Proceed south and exit at Inwood, WV. Turn left into Inwood. Turn right at the traffic light (at the “T”). Turn left onto Route 51 at the next traffic light and proceed east to the tiny town of Middleway. Turn right onto Leetown Road (Route 1) and continue south for about five miles until you reach the first stop sign (located immediately after crossing a set of railroad tracks). Turn right onto Summit Point Road (Route 13). Summit Point Motorsports Park is on your left about a mile down the road.

From Route 15: Proceed south on Route 15. At Frederick, MD take Route 340 west toward Charles Town WV. Follow the road signs to Charles Town. When Route 340 turns south, follow Route 51 to and through Charles Town.

At the west end of town at the stop sign where the road forks, bear left toward Summit Point (Route 51 bears to the right and goes northwest to Interstate 81). The eight or so miles to Summit Point is full of twists and turns ( a fun driver’s road). Just beyond the small town of Summit Point, the motorsports park is on your left.

During the Labor Day PHA Jefferson Time Trial, Summit Point also hosts a double SCCA regional road race on their 2.1 mile course. Summit Point charges a $25 entrance fee for road race spectators. To avoid this fee, PHA drivers, their crew and guests must inform the officials at the Summit Point gate that they are registered for the SCCA PHA Time Trial group at the Jefferson Circuit and they are not here for the road race. There is no charge, then, at the main gate for entrance to the facility.
